a book of typefaces

Mein letztes Lieblingsbuch habe ich von einem Besuch bei Boesner mitgebracht. Eigentlich wollte ich dort bloß ein paar Spachtel kaufen gehen, aber naja, so ist das ja irgendwie immer bei Boesner.
Das Buch A Visual History of Typefaces and Graphic Styles vom Taschen Verlag zeigt Schriftmuster noch und nöcher. Ich wußte gar nicht, dass anscheinend William Caslon (Caslon Old Style habt ihr bestimmt auch auf eurem Rechner) der erste war, der anfing Musterblätter von seinen Schriften zu drucken um sie zu dokumentieren und anderen Druckern zum Kauf anzubieten. Im Vorwort beschreibt der Sammler Jan Tholenaar, dass ihn seine Leidenschaft für eben solchen Schriftmuster durch ganz Europa und noch weiter in alle Antiquariare der Welt treibt und ihn nach Schätzen suchen lässt. Verrückt, oder?
Aber ich selbst verwahre auch ein Schriftmuster Heftchen von House Industries und Booklets von Underware in der Schublade. Das ist zwar nicht zu vergleichen aber auch hier kommt wegschmeißen nicht in Frage und so ein bißchen kann ich den verrückten Sammler schon verstehen. Wörter präsentieren sich grafisch schön ohne unbedingt eine Botschaft zu transportieren. Hübsch.

This is actually my favourite book. „A Visual History of Typefaces and Graphic Styles“ published by Taschen. I bought it while heading through a local art supply store to get some new spatula. That book is all about type specimens and weighs a ton. In the introduction the collector Jan Tholenaar writes about his passion for type specimens that made him seek for type treasuries in many second hand bookshops in the world. Now he has 35 meter specimen books in his library one of them the Manuale tipografico from Bodoni. Crazy man. But thinking of specimen I must admit there’s one booklet from House Industries and a few booklets from Underware in my drawer. That’s not a real comparison but I understand a bit why to collect type specimen. Words that represent the typeface without a real message are graphically nice.
