Heute in der Post: So tolle Tüten, in denen sich noch tollere Kalender verstecken. Das jährliche Kalenderprojekt von Tschau Tschüssi geht nun schon in die 4. Runde. Es bringt 12 Illustratoren zusammen, die jeweils einen Monat gestalten und ich bin diesmal mit dem Februar dabei. Und da das Jahr mit riesen Schritten auf den Jahreswechsel zusteuert, gibts die Kalender bereits käuflich zu erwerben. Na dann: auf ein 1A Jahr 2012.
Übrigens, ich sammle diese Tüten. Dankeschön! 🙂

I very like that project. Every year twelve Illustrators contribute work for an indie published calendar, organized by Tschau Tschuessi, a shop located in Leipzig. I contributed the February pages and down below you see some other illustrations I like. Today I received them in the vintage paper bag. I collect those bags, how could they know? Nice people.

Puh, die Konferenz war toll und ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass man vom zuhören so k.o. sein kann. Zwei Tage Programm auf Englisch lassen einem den Kopf rauchen. Wie gut, dass man die Vorträge aus der Main Hall nochmal im Livestream anschauen kann.
Super viele Leute haben wir alle getroffen und es ist immer interessant die Stories der anderen Small Businesses zu hören. Ob Marmelade, Tee oder Pflanzen das Geschäft ist – jeder fängt anders an, aber irgendwie haben doch alle die gleichen Schwierigkeiten. So, aber nun gehts wieder auf ins Tagesgeschäft. Chaka.

Phew, I feel a bit overloaded after this inspiring conference. It was very interesting to hear all the stories behind the other small businesses. If you do T-Shirts, Jam or Tea – at some point we all have to fight the same challenges. But I haven’t expected I would be so exhausted from just listening.

cabaret typographie

Eine mysteriöse Botschaft fischte ich dieser Tage aus der hintersten Ecke unseres Briefkastens. Eigentlich war es gar keine Botschaft nur ein mit Buchstaben bedrucktes Papier in der Größe eines Lesezeichens. Auf der Rückseite befand sich eine Tumblr-Adresse. Sonst nichts. Nun ist dieser Briefkasten die Postadresse von 10 Leuten, den Mitgliedern der Werketage und die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass nicht adressierte Post ihren angedachten Empfänger findet ist – wie soll ich sagen – Glückssache.
Was ein Glück also, dass ich als die erste am Briefkasten, das Lesezeichen vor dem vermeintlichen Mülleimer bewahren konnte. Mit der Adresse in der Hand lief ich also zurück ins Atelier, tippte sie ein und klickte durch die Arbeiten von Cabaret Typographie. Eine eMail und ein paar Tage später stand Tommaso (rechts im Bild) dann im Atelier und erzählte mir von den Projekten in seinem Druck Kollektiv.
Ich mag Berlin. Früher oder später kommt ihr nämlich alle zu Besuch. Cheers!

The other day I picked a mysterious letter out of our mailbox. It wasn’t a real letter but rather a paper in the size of a bookmark printed all over with various letters on one side and with a tumblr-address on the back. No delivery address, nothing. We from my workshop floor share that mailbox, so this bookmark could have been for any of us 10 but as it was letterpress printed the probability it should reach me was given I thought. So I went straight back in the atelier to check the tumblr address and got in contact with Tommaso (the guy on the right) who visited me this week and told me about his group Cabaret Typographie.
That’s what I love about Berlin. Some day you will come and visit. You’re welcome. Cheers and Ciao!

book: handmade type workshop

Jetzt habe ich schon zwei Bücher von Charlotte Rivers. Das little Book auf Letterpress hatte ich mir in San Francisco in einem Laden von Chronicle Books geleistet (seufz, den müßte es hier auch geben) und es gefällt mir super gut. Letzte Woche bin ich auf dem Blog von Charlotte Rivers über ihr neues Buch Handmade Type Workshop gestolpert, das bei Thames & Hudson erschienen ist. Keine Frage, gleich bestellt und heute ist es da. Das tolle daran ist, dass die vorgestellten Designer neben ihrem Portfolio auch noch zeigen wie es geht. Wie man einen Buchstaben faltet, schnitzt, hämmert oder stickt. So eine Inspirationsschub am Montag ist ganz schön gefährlich. Ich sollte montags immer erst Bestellungen ab arbeiten, zur Post und etwas Buchhaltung machen… nun muß ich mich ranhalten.

Back in May I bought the little book of Letterpress by Charlotte Rivers at the Chronicle Bookstore in San Francisco. (Great store, great books, I wish they would have a store here.) And I very like that book. So no surprise that I immediately ordered her new book as I came across it on her blog last week. Today it arrived. Hooray. What I very like about it is the designers doesn’t only show her work; they give you a tutorial. Make your own papercut, stitched letter, poster…  whatever. They even talk about fontographer. If you are into making your own type have a closer look into that book.

a book about scripts

Letzte Woche war ich dann doch nicht in der Bibliothek. Denn mein bestelltes Buch ist angekommen und so konnte ich im Atelier bleiben und dort schmökern. Das Buch Scripts zeigt Schreibschriften in der Anwendung aus Frankreich, Italien, Deutschland und England und bietet ganz viel Inspiration. Hübsch!

My ordered book has arrived last week. So I didn’t go to the library, I stayed in the atelier, got a coffee and flipped through the pages. The book is about Scripts in use in England, Italy, Germany and France. Pure Inspiration.

Heute habe ich mir einen Vogel gefaltet. Den hatte ich mir während des Dawanda Marktes auf meinem Flur gekauft, plano sozusagen. Der ist toll, oder? Britta alias birdtoldme zeigt in ihrem Video Tutorial wie man ihn faltet. Gefällt mir, die T-Shirts in ihrem Shop übrigens auch.

Am Freitag zeige ich Euch dann wie mein Tisch die Woche über aussah. Es wird auch einige Veränderungen hier auf dem blog im Juli geben und im August startet ein Special-(blabla)-Sale im Shop. Das genaue Wort muß ich mir noch bis Freitag überlegen…  Na dann!

Isn’t this a cute bird? I fold it today after watching Britta’s tutorial online. I bought the printed flat sheet at the Dawanda Market, she was with her products next door. I very like her t-shirts!
You gonna see how my atelier desk has changed during this week on friday. There’ll be some changes on blogging in July and a special-blabla-sale in my shop in August. I’ll try to find a word for it…

So kurz vor dem langen Wochenende möchte ich Euch noch die coolen Linolschnitte von 3 Fish Studios mit auf den Weg geben. Über die bin bei meinem Besuch in SF gestolpert und fast hätte ich noch einen Blick in Eric und Annies Studio werfen können, was dann zeitlich nicht mehr geklappt hat. I nearly forgot we’ve a bank holiday on monday, so I’ll be off for a looong weekend. Now here are just a few prints for you from 3 Fish Studios. Eric made these cool linocuts in his studio in SF that I couldn’t visit due to the other appointments I made within the last days on my visit. These prints and the pictures of Eric and Annie’s studio are very inspiring to me. Have a great weekend anyone.

Hallo Berlin

Hurra, es ist geschafft. Es ist raus. Unser Büchlein Hallo Berlin ist endlich im Handel. Der Wahnsinn!
Letztes Jahr während der heißen Tage beim Wedding Dress haben Jana und ich uns ein gemeinsames Projekt ausgedacht. Ein Heft mit Zeichnungen zu Berlin war der Grundgedanke. Zwischen zeitlich hatten wir vor es bis Weihnachten 2010 fertig zu stellen, aber ha ha, dann sollte es auch eigentlich mit auf die Buchmesse, aber tja wie es halt so kommt. Nun ist es endlich fertig und wir konnten letzte Woche auf die ersten Exemplare anstoßen. Es enthält Zeichnungen, Stadtpläne und Tipps zu Berlin und ist im Berlin Story Verlag erschienen. Es kostet 7,80 €. Also Prost!
Übrigens wir werden demnächst eins auf Facebook verlosen und natürlich beim Dawanda Design Markt verkaufen. Schaut mal vorbei!

Hooray, it’s done! Finally. Wohoo. Our little book Hallo Berlin is published. 
While we were sitting behind our market booth last year in summer we decided to do a project together. Jana and me wanted to do some drawings about Berlin. We had no idea that this will turn into a real book. So we were more than overwhelmed as we got the first copies last week. To have the own book in the hands finally with an ISBN number feels something special. That is more than we’d expected. We gonna do a give-away on Facebook the next days and will sell some copies at the Dawanda Designmarket in two weeks along with our other stuff. Say hello if you’re around 🙂

die Beute

Also den Umschlägen mit Kordelverschluss konnte ich nicht widerstehen. Und diese alten Holzlineale – ich habe insgesamt 4 Lineale mitgebracht, das längste ist ein Meter und mußte mit ins Flugzeug. Masking Tape war gar nicht so präsent wie ich gedacht hätte, vielleicht ist der Trend dort schon wieder vorbei. Und ich mag nahezu alles von Yellow Owl Workshop.

I loved the wooden rulers and bought me 4 styles, the longest one measures 1 meter and had to go with my hand luggage on the plane. I like nearly everything from Yellow Owl Workshop and I couldn’t resist those envelopes with the button string closure. A beauty.
